What is Organic Cotton?

Cotton that is produced from genetically modified organism (GMO)-free seeds, without the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

Why Organic Cotton?

The production of cotton represents 3% of global agricultural production, but it involves the use of large quantities of chemical pesticides. Compared to other agricultural products, cotton production requires the highest amount of chemical substances, with 16% of the world’s pesticides being used for cotton production. These chemicals are intended to target insects that hinder cotton growth, but they are absorbed by the soil, leading to contamination of surface water and air. Soils treated with chemical fertilizers result in water loss as they are less capable of retaining water.

Most of the chemicals used in cotton production are carcinogenic and harmful to our nervous system. Pesticides persist in the cotton fibers, do not disappear during washing, and can be easily absorbed by our skin.

Chlorine bleach is commonly used in cotton processing due to its cost-effectiveness, but this process releases a toxin called dioxin. In contrast, organic cotton is bleached using oxygen, which is a more expensive method.

For these reasons, products made from organic cotton with GOTS certification are much healthier compared to other products.

The decision to use organic cotton is a guarantee for our health, the health of future generations, and the future of our planet. Traditional agricultural practices of the last century, which involved the use of hazardous pesticides, fertilizers, and genetically modified crops, can be replaced by organic farming methods.

What is GOTS certificate?

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is an abbreviation for the Global Organic Textile Standard. To obtain this certification, a fabric must meet several requirements. GOTS sets high standards in all stages of production, ensuring that the goods are produced in an environmentally, economically, and socially responsible manner.

GOTS conducts regular inspections during the manufacturing phase. Brands with GOTS certification undergo strict control of labor practices, waste treatment, transportation, packaging, and the evaluation of chemical substances.
